Which course is for me?
We strongly recommend all prospective new-entrants to the licensed trade to undertake our unique 3-day ‘Inn Business’ course, which includes your 1-day Personal Licence course (NCPLH). If you have the time available, it makes sense to add the separate 1-day Cellar Management course - and so undertake a 4-day course which will give you the most comprehensive preparation available for your first licensed business venture.
We also offer the NCPLH as a 1-day 'stand-alone' course for those who require only the NCPLH qualification without undertaking the full ‘Inn Business’ course.
What about dates and availability?
Please refer to our revised Course Schedule.
Where are the courses held?
Our courses are located in the heart of Melbourne, Derbyshire. With less than 2 hours travel time from London or York, students are drawn from all regions of the UK to our central England location close to East Midlands Airport which is easily reached by the M40/M42, M1 or A50. There are also excellent express train connections to nearby Derby and Loughborough. Full directions will be sent with your Joining Instructions pack when we confirm your reservation.
What about overnight accommodation?
There is a wide variety of guest house and hotel accommodation within easy reach of our training centre - with a number within easy walking distance. A list of establishments used regularly by our clients can be found here.
What is included in my course fees?
For each of our courses, fees include all tuition and comprehensive course literature, teas/coffees and buffet lunches and every student receives the relevant Guy Simmonds personalised Attendance Diploma. Clients attending the “Inn Business” course or our 1-day NCPLH course will also receive our unique pocket sized Drugs Awareness Guide and will have the opportunity to view our comprehensive Drugs Information and Responsible Drinking displays during the course.
What additional expenses do I need to budget for?
The only items are your travel costs to the course, your overnight accommodation (if required), and the BIIAB examination charge for the NCPLH which we are obliged to collect on behalf of the BIIAB. The exam fee is quoted in the price panel of the course.
I'm worried about exams!
Then don't be! All our tutors have years of experience in teaching people of all ages, and from all backgrounds with widely varying skills and prior experience. Our job is to make learning a pleasure as well as equipping you with skills and knowledge. We happen to be very good at it! The only exam you need is the NCPLH examination, which is a straight forward multiple choice questionnaire. It is also reassuring for you to know that the right answer is on the page in front of you - you've just got to identify it from a choice of 4 (A, B, C or D). Provided you pay reasonable attention to what we discuss you can be confident of achieving the necessary pass mark - you're in very safe hands! If we still haven't convinced you - you can opt out of the exam altogether if you wish. That's not a problem, but the vast majority of our clients are seeking to gain a personal licence, for which the NCPLH is a prerequisite. We usually receive notification within a few days of your course and we give you the news by telephone the same day as we receive your results from the BIIAB.
What previous experience do I need?
Simple! - none whatsoever if you are attending our “Inn Business” course, our Cellar Management & Drinks Service course or the 'stand-alone' NCPLH course. These courses are specifically designed for the new-entrant to the licensed trade and assume no prior knowledge of the licensed trade.
Who will be present on the course?
Well... people just like you. We keep our class sizes to a level where we can make sure everyone receives the individual attention they require whilst allowing you the opportunity to enjoy discussing your plans and experiences with fellow like-minded students - as well as enjoying the great camaraderie which is a key part of all our courses.
As well as meeting our tutors who all have vast personal experience of owning and operating successful licensed businesses, you will have the opportunity on our “Inn Business” course to meet guest speakers drawn from our associated firms of specialist licensed trade solicitors, accountants, stocktakers, insurance brokers and finance brokers. These associates will provide free specialist advice in their relevant area of business, and all offer preferential terms to those clients who use their services subsequent to the course.
What happens after my course?
The BIIAB NCPLH certificate for the qualification you have gained is usually sent to you within 2 weeks of your results notification. After that, you will no doubt be involved in either searching for your licensed business (our property sales department will be delighted to help), or you may be making preparations to take over a business - or perhaps you are already 'in' and in need of a friendly voice to offer some advice or answer a query. Our service does not end when we say 'Goodbye' at the end of a course. Always treat us as your first port-of-call if you need any advice or help in your business quest. If we can't help you directly - we're bound to know 'a man who can'.
